Watermelon: A Summer Classic Comes To Life

Nothing is more coveted at summer picnics than a ripe, red Watermelon! Children love biting into a slice, the juice running down their chins, and adults enjoy feeling like a kid again. Spitting the black watermelon seeds the farthest has also been a favorite pastime at many family reunions.

Today is National Watermelon Day, so we have come up with a quick and easy way to pay homage to this favorite summer fruit, by making a watermelon ornament to hang in your home as a decoration. Makes a great party favor for a family reunion or make one for the winner of the watermelon seed spitting contest!

How To Make A Watermelon Ornament

Making a Watermelon Ornament is fun for the whole family. Kids love to help!

Supplies:

  • Clear glass ball ornament
  • Black watermelon seeds
  • Clear glue
  • Red glitter paint (we used Martha Stewart Candy Apple)
  • Red paint (we used Martha Stewart Love Bird)
  • Green ribbon
  • Paint marker (optional)

Step 1: Carefully place a dab of glue on ONE side of each of the watermelon seeds. They are small, so be careful not to glue your fingers!

Step 2: Remove the top of the ornament. Gently insert a seed into the hole of the glass ball and tilt the ball around until the glued side of the watermelon seed sticks to the wall of the ornament. Do this for each of the seeds. Let glue set and dry.

Step 3: Pour glitter paint into the ornament and swirl it around.

Step 4: Pour the paint into the ornament and rotate it around, mixing it with the glitter paint. After the entire ornament is completed coated inside, pour the remaining paint out of the ornament.

Step 5: Turn the glass ball upside down on paper towels to let the remnant paint drip out and let it dry overnight.

Note: If you are having a hard time balancing the ball, place paper towels in the bottom of a glass and sit the ornament upside down on the rim.

Step 6: Return the cap back on the ornament and tie a ribbon in the bow at the top of your watermelon ornament.

Step 7 (optional): Personalize the outside of your watermelon with a paint marker if you are making it for a specific event.

That’s it! Now you have a fun watermelon ornament that you can hang in a stand as a centerpiece on your table, mantelpiece or shelf. Personalize it with the name of an annual picnic, family reunion or corporate event to commemorate your summer fun!
