I remember two years ago when we became World Series Champions here in Chicago with the Cubs, we were over the moon with happiness. The entire city had a massive celebration breaking the 108-year losing streak. It was such a hit that we’ve noticed there’s been a baby boom in our city, and we were ecstatic to see all the personalized ornaments for baseball-baby’s first Christmas.
10 Moments in MLB Franchise History
I think it’s only fitting to talk about the best moments in baseball for some of the most popular teams in the league on such a historic day! Here I’ve picked out my favorite fun facts from 10 MLB teams.
- The New York Yankees have gotten to play in over 100 opening day games.
- When the Chicago Cubs “fly the W,” it means they raise a flag for a “Win” at Wrigley field over the centerfield scoreboard.
- The Cincinnati Reds were the very first official baseball team founded in 1869.
- The New York Mets were almost named the Avengers, Bees or Islanders, and were instead called the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club.
- For over 50 years not a single player on the Oakland Athletics wore facial hair until 1972 when Rollie Fingers sported a mustache to the World Series.
- For a brief year, the St. Louis Cardinals were named the Perfectos in 1900 as they moved into the National League.
- Legend has it, the tall wall referred to as “the Green Monster” around the Boston Red Sox stadium was originally built to block a line of bars from having a free view of the game.
- The Philadelphia Phillies were nicknamed the Bluejays in 1947 by a new owner, but fans wouldn’t adopt it and the name only lasted two season.
- The Baltimore Orioles play “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” during the 7th inning stretch of every game.
- The Los Angeles Dodgers have made it to the playoffs 27 times and made it to appear in 18 World Series games.
It’s incredible to think about all the different MLB teams, they’re players, the fans, and all the amazing memories made together. Not to mention, all of these good times can be captured and remembered for years to come through ornaments at our family celebrations!
