I have always wondered how to blow out an egg. With all of the pretty colors of Easter out everywhere in spring, I decided to try it myself and here have chronicled the steps that you need to take so you can know how to blow out an egg too.
Supplies Needed to Blow Out an Egg:
- Eggs (at room temperature)
- Pin or Push Pin
- Paper Clip
- Drinking Straw
- Small Bowl
- Glass of Water
- Tape
- Optional: Colorful Ribbon for hanging
7 Steps On How To Blow Out An Egg
Step 1: Place tape in an X over the top and bottom of the egg. I used black tape to be able to see it better, but you can use clear tape. This helps prevent the egg from breaking. Using the pin, poke a hole in the pointier end of the egg. Then do the same to the opposite end. Gently remove the adhesive.
Tip: To know how to blow out an egg requires a gentle touch and a lot of patience! Don’t exert too much force like I did or you will be sure to break your fragile egg!
Step 2: Carefully make the two holes larger by moving the pin around in the hole, exerting gentle pressure. The diameter of the hole on the top needs to be large enough for the straw to fit through it.
Step 3: Straighten the paper clip and poke it through the hole, breaking the yoke. Gently push the paper clip in and out of the hole repeatedly to break up the membrane around the yoke.
Step 4: Holding the egg over a bowl, insert the straw through the hole and blow air through the straw. Allow the egg to collect in the bowl. Continue this process until the egg is empty.
Step 5: Pour the glass of water through the hole to rinse it.
Step 6: Use your straw to blow all of the water out. Gently shake the egg and keep repeating the water process until the egg is completely clean.
Step 7: Dry the egg. You can either wait 2-3 days for the egg to completely drain or bake the eggs to dry them. To bake them, either microwave the eggshell on high for 15-30 seconds or put in the oven for 10 minutes at 300 degrees.
Note: Do not heat them too long, or they will crack in extreme heat!
Now that you know how to blow out an egg, it is ready for decorating with paint or dye. If you want to hang your egg like an ornament, thread a colorful ribbon through the holes that you made in the top and bottom of the egg and tie it off with a knot at the bottom, like we did here.
Your egg is ready for display!
Tips:
- A blown egg will float in liquid, so if you intend to dye the blown egg, you will need to force it to stay submerged.
- Wash your hands before and after handling the eggs, because raw eggs may carry salmonella.
