Marcia, the artist who hand-paints these made in America bird ornaments, lives in Delaware. She has been painting her bird ornaments since 1996, after being inspired by watching wild birds in their natural surroundings. They say “birds of a feather flock together” and Marcia is the kind of artist we love to partner with. Her glass ball ornaments are the perfect gift for the bird lovers or bird watchers on your Christmas list!

Discover How Wild Birds Inspired Made In America Bird Ornaments

Marcia didn’t always want to paint wild birds, or create bird ornaments that are made in America. The way she got started is “kind of strange” in her own words. Being handy with a needle and thread, Marcia began making Christmas ornaments for friends and family using needlepoint and other sewing methods, but quickly started running out of ideas.

Inspired by a magazine article, she started painting on glass ball ornaments. She started with puffy paints, the material that was trending at the time, and after messy applications and difficulty with the paints, said “I don’t want to do this.” She grabbed a pencil and some paper and sketched out a cardinal. Excited about her artwork at the time, she now looks back on that first drawing and exclaims that it “looks hideous”! Her husband insisted it looked nice and a bird ornaments artist was born!

Bird Ornaments Made In America Are This Artist’s Calling

She has always loved nature, but became an avid bird watcher after she started painting wild birds on her bird ornaments. With plenty of bird-friendly plants and berries in her yard, she was inspired by the flocks that visited the birdfeeders and now has them scattered everywhere. She sketches the wild birds as she sees them, uses the sketches as templates, then researches colors and finishing details to get these made in America creations just right.

Marcia’s current list of painted bird species is extensive and extreme, including 350+ different bird ornaments! She now gets customer requests for wild birds and uses photographs as models for rare species that she can’t find in her backyard or locally at the zoo. “What attracts me are the poses of the birds. I want them to be immediately recognizable.” She takes great care to mix colors for feathers and can only produce 6-9 ornaments a day because of the fine details that you can only get in items made in America.

Marcia produces approximately 2500-3000 bird ornaments per year, all done by hand and all made in America. She works year round and is constantly filling orders. She even works on custom animals, currently creating a glass ball ornament from a photo that a friend took on safari in Africa, containing African wild dogs. Her artistic ability isn’t limited to just bird ornaments!

One of her greatest feats is that her husband used to just call them her “birds”, but now he can affectionately name each bird species as well. She claims that all of this work is not “for the birds” because she laughs and says it “keeps me off the streets”.

Oh my word. There is no word that can describe these beautiful ball ornaments. I have 15 of these lovely designs, from birds to squirrels, to a black bear, that I have collected. Is there a sight online that one can order? They are absolutely gorgeous. Linda
